Solid glass retroreflectors are also known as corner cubes or trihedral prisms. Any ray entering the effective aperture of a retroreflector will be reflected and emerge from the entrance/exit face parallel to itself, but in the opposite direction of propagation. Solid retroreflectors depend upon the principle of total internal reflection and therefore have acceptance angle limitations.
An incident beam, filling the effective aperture, is reflected exactly back on itself.
Protected-aluminum coatings can be applied to the rear reflecting surfaces to avoid TIR failure from acceptance angle limitations.
